I saw this farmhouse console table on an Instagram account that I follow. You’re probably familiar with Shanty 2 Chic. They have tons of free plans and most of their builds are relatively easy. I sent Preston the plans and he got to work. You can find the plans here.
Total, it cost around $40 to build this table. We modified the length of the table because the original plans called for it to be 94.5 inches long. That was a little too long for my liking, so we modified it to be around 78 inches instead.
When Preston finished building the table, we let it sit for about a week in the house until we decided which color to paint/stain it. I have so much white furniture in my living room, so we opted for a blue base with a stained top. The base color is Glidden Dark Winter Sky Blue. We stained the top with General Finishes Java Gel Stain. We are obsessed with this brand!
I think this was a good fit for this wall in my living room and the cow definitely makes a little more sense now. I’m now on the hunt for a couple of white baskets for underneath! I am really happy with how this turned out!
Ever notice that no matter the size of your kitchen, that’s where everyone seems to gather? Well, I didn’t want everyone to gather in our kitchen because I really wasn’t a fan of the green floors we had. They were really cramping my style. (Excuse the dirty house–this was the night before construction).
My husband and I had been talking about replacing them for a while but just kept putting it off. Finally, we decided there was no better time than now, so we got to work. We felt this was a job that needed to be done by a professional, so we bought all the materials and let the tile man go to work.
We settled on a 12×24 silver porcelain tile. After looking all over Madison County, low and behold, we found the tile of our choice from Lowes. You can find it, here.
After we bought the materials (tile, thin set, grout, backer board, screws, etc.) we let the tile man get to work. He made pretty amazing progress on day one! Shout out to Robert’s Custom Tile!
I don’t think the floor registers had been replaced since the house was built so we bought new ones that you can find here. We are BIG Amazon Prime shoppers when it comes to house hold items such as light fixtures and other miscellaneous things!
Needless to say, this was a long overdue project, and we are so glad we got this one knocked out in time for Memorial Day Weekend! Slowly but surely, we are putting our kitchen back together. We are excited to have friends and family over to gather in our kitchen!
I had this vision when we moved into our new (old) home, that I would become this trendy blogger, blogging about all things DIY and updates we made to our house along the way. Clearly, I have failed miserably. But hey, it’s never too late!
My other goal was to blog solely so I had the opportunity to write. I was once told that I was good writer… ok, maybe not so much a good writer but that I was relatable. I hope that I can relate to you all in my blog posts. Not every post will be about our home. After all, I am no Chip and Joanna Gains although I tell my husband he reminds me of Chip ALL the time.
Anyways, moving on.
Let’s talk about living rooms. My living room has changed 100 times since moving in. Let me note, that I have a super patient husband who puts up with my constant change of things so thank you, P! I’ve probably changed my curtains out 3 times, my rug out 3-4 times, and for some reason I just can’t make up my mind. I have this weird style, you see. I love the farmhouse style, but for some reason can never seem to capture it in my home. Anybody feel me on this? I’ve come to just accept my living room as is, and I’m moving on to other projects.
Unfortunately, these pictures do not show the entirety of my living room, but we are in the process of building a table for the back wall. I’ll blog about that under the wood working section of my blog once it’s complete so stay tuned!
We are FINALLY getting new kitchen floors! I am hopeful they will be done by the weekend! Day one of moving into this house I said, “Those floors have got to go.” I’m so anxious!
I am SO excited to finally be sharing some of our house updates with you. I haven’t had internet in the new house for a little over a week…I feel like I’ve been living off the grid! Just kidding, but I am excited to get this thing started and share with you some things we have been working on in the last week or so. The Green Garage Door
What an eye sore it was. When we first looked at this house, we saw how much potential it had. Everyone who saw it said to us, “You are going to paint that garage door, right?” We assured them it was the first thing on our list. We went out of town to visit family and while we were gone, we had our painter come paint some of the interior of the house. He offered to paint the garage for an extra $100… DONE! It’s amazing how much better the exterior looks since having this done. Garage doors are meant to blend with the house, not stand out and be a focal point.
Ceiling Fan Nightmare
Let’s just say the original owners hadn’t replaced the ceiling fans probably since the house was built back in 1986. YIKES!
They were brown. They were small. They had lattice on them. You guys, this is such an easy fix! Preston and I had gone a few weeks before we moved to Home Depot and picked out a new ceiling fan. We went with the Hunter “Channing” fan. It was $99! You can’t beat that. Originally, we had planned to only replace the one in the living room and the master bedroom. Those were the only ceiling fans in the house. Before we knew it, we had bought 4 ceiling fans and now have them in 3 of the bedrooms and in the living room. They looked that good!
Bye Bye, Yellow Walls
Yall, I have just never been a fan of yellow walls. In our last house, we had the gold/yellow standard contractors paint throughout the house when we first moved in. Eventually, we had the whole house painted Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter. The original owners of this house had recently painted most of the house Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige. It was close enough the the Revere Pewter, so we had the rooms that were still yellow painted while we were out of town visiting family. It literally changed everything.
We have officially been in our house two weeks today, and we are making some headway. Our current, and very large undertaking, are the kitchen cabinets. This makes the second weekend we have been working on them. I’ll save that one for another blog!
Preston and I closed on our home on September 20th. It truly felt like the day would never come that we could call her ours.
I want to tell you a little bit about our house hunt because I think that is why we have come to love this house so much (already). When we started listing what was important to us in a house, Preston and I had VERY specific things we were looking for. If this was going to be our forever home, we had to make sure we got everything we wanted. Preston wanted a BIG yard, at least an acre. He also wanted a pool, and really didn’t care where the house was as long as it resided in Madison County. He also wanted a house with some character in a more established area.
I on the other hand, wanted most of those things as well, but I was pretty set on somewhere with a great school system so I was leaning more towards Madison. I certainly wanted a pool, but also knew that it would be tough to find.
We looked at a number of houses, and for a while, it felt like lost cause. I had actually looked at this house back in June but had dismissed it because it was a little higher than what we wanted to spend. One night while I was asleep, Preston came across this house again and was convinced it was ours. I’m pretty sure he even woke me up in the middle of the night to show me.
Feeling optimistic, we went to look at it the next weekend and as soon as we walked in, I nearly cried. I knew it was it. It was everything we had been looking for in a home.
It had character
It had a .9 acre lot
It had a pool
It had plenty of room for us to grow into
It was in the heart of Madison (but still so close to Huntsville and only 5 minutes from my work)
It had a sunroom
Did it need a little work? Sure. But it was nothing we couldn’t handle. We couldn’t wait to get our hands on it and get to work.
That day, we put in an offer and we are so glad we did. We have not been in our house long, but love it more than we ever thought we could. I’m so excited to share with you how we are putting our special touch on this home and I hope you will follow along! Stay tuned!
A couple of years ago, my mother in law hinted that she wanted Preston to build her a kitchen island. Christmas was right around the corner, so we thought it would be the perfect gift. We started searching for free plans and found several islands we thought would work.
We found some plans from Shanty 2 Chic that we really loved (no surprise there). These ladies are some of my favorite bloggers to follow! You can find the free plans here. As noted in their blog, it was inspired by an island they saw from Pottery Barn.
After the island was built, we sanded it down and decided to paint it with Annie Sloan chalk paint. We bought the drawer handle and the hook from Lowes and Preston found the casters from Harbor Freight. Dave decided to join in on the fun and actually had a piece of granite cut for the island. It was the perfect addition to this project!
It turned out so much better than we could have ever imagined, and I think my mother in law was pleased as well. There were lots of happy tears when we wheeled it in the house on Christmas morning. It is a functional, and beautiful piece and one of my favorite woodworking projects we have done to date.

It all started when I began blogging my Whole30 journey back in March. When that was over, I wanted to continue writing because I had such great feedback from my blog posts and I genuinely enjoyed writing them. Let’s be honest, my Whole30 blog was fun, but healthy eating is not something I am super great at and definitely not something I could blog about all the time. I felt like it was a good time to transition my blog into something I really enjoyed…all things DIY.
A few years ago in our first home on Maddie Ridge, I kept telling Preston that I wanted a farmhouse table for my dining room. After checking out Pottery Barn and other furniture stores, we realized that the prices were outrageous and there was no way we could have one unless we built it ourselves. We immediately began searching for plans and found the perfect one from Ana White. Click here for the plans.
In just a month, my husband who had never built anything like this before, built the most beautiful table. THIS is where it all started. He began woodworking and building other things like coffee and end tables, a kitchen island for his mom, benches, nightstands, bookshelves, etc.
This is where the obsession started.
While this blog is just in the beginning stages, I hope that you will follow along as I share some of our favorite projects that we have done, as well as some very anticipated projects we hope to begin in our next home. We are currently in the process of purchasing our next house, and have LOTS of projects lined up for it! If all goes as planned, we will be settling in next month into our “farmhouse in the city” as I like to call it. It is a great house and I can’t wait to share it with you all!
In the meantime, watch for blog posts on previously done projects, and hopefully next month I will be able to share some new, bigger and more challenging ones! 🙂
We are DONE with our 3rd Whole 30! Today, is Day 34 and I have to say, I have really surprised myself. I really have not had any cravings for any foods. Yesterday morning, I made PALEO blueberry muffins and they were OH SO GOOD. It was seriously the most delicious thing we’ve had in weeks. Preston went on and on about how good they were. There’s something different about finishing this Whole 30. I have every intention of continuing to do well. Just the fact that I haven’t really wanted any other foods is surprising me BIG. Last year after we finished a Whole30, I had 2 Krispy Kreme donuts for breakfast the next morning. I’ve had no desire for it this time around.
I’m still planning to have my cheat meal today, but then it’s back to the grind. Preston and I have to take advantage of pretty off days together! The amount of energy I had yesterday was insane. I did a couple of laps around the neighborhood, and then came back and worked out abs and arms…just spur of the moment because I wanted to. I felt GOOD so I took advantage.
I am loving the way my clothes fit again. I love the way I feel. I went shopping yesterday for some new work pants because mine don’t fit anymore. Everything fit so good! I am fitting back into my usual size and am working towards dropping down another.
I love that I don’t CRAVE greasy foods. I saw a number on the scale I haven’t seen in a while. I am still not quite where I want to be, but I’m closer. Why throw away all of my hard work? I am now motivated to work harder.
I have lost around 12-13lbs.
Energy levels are WAY up

I’m more motivated than I have been in a while
PS: Preston lost 26lbs!!!!!! Believe it!
I’m really proud of how far we’ve come in the last 34 days and I am looking forward to continuing on the Whole9 Lifestyle.
If you are thinking about doing a Whole30… DO IT! Do your research, know what you are getting into, and then knock it out. You can do anything for 30 days!

We are nearly done with our 3rd Whole 30 journey. It’s crazy! Today is DAY 29 which means tomorrow is the last day. I’ve had been reflecting a lot on the last few weeks so I wanted to share my thoughts…
Whole 30 is Crazy
Yes, I know it is. I know that everybody thinks that we are bananas for giving up delicious food and alcohol for 30 whole days. It’s crazy that we are turning down friends and family to do certain things because we can’t eat out at certain restaurants and can’t attend happy hour. We are crazy because, who would pass up macaroni and cheese casserole and red velvet cake on Easter to eat ham and steamed broccoli? Yes, that’s us, but guess what? It’s only 30 days. This thing isn’t forever, ya’ll. You can do ANYTHING for 30 days. Drinking your coffee black for 30 days, is not hard and it’s a choice we have made. I’m not saying this is something I have heard a lot… in fact, I really have had a lot of GREAT support from close family and friends, but I want everyone to know that we are big girls and boys and it’s totally okay for us to say “No” every once in a while.
In the last 28 days…
I have lost somewhere between 10-12 lbs
My energy level is through the roof
I am sleeping better
My pants are entirely too big (Guess I’ll have to go shopping 🙂 )
And I am looking forward to making better decisions going forward
I pretty much have decided to stick to a Paleo diet 5-6 days a week, and have 1 cheat day where I eat absolutely whatever I want. Hey, if I can have paleo pancakes and muffins on Paleo, sign me up! With that being said, my plan is to try and keep dairy, grains, sugar, and beans out of my diet (keeping the alcohol in- where my wine-o’s at?) I realize I may not be entirely perfect but it’s about making better choices all around. It’s about going out to dinner with friends and making a better decision but still be able to enjoy myself. I really do not want to mess up everything I have worked so hard for the last 29 days.
I also plan to incorporate exercise into my diet. Over the last week or so, Preston and I have kind of felt somewhat of a plateau. If I want to lose any more, I’m going to have to hit the gym. My goal is to do 30 minutes of cardio 3-5 days a week, and to start lifting some free weights! We’ll see how that goes!
I wish I had more food to post, but I don’t. I was really terrible and snapping pics of my food this go round.
Meatballs with Zoodles
I actually found the marinara sauce at Publix and it was Whole 30 approved. The marinara was GreenWise brand. I added a little basil just to give it some flavor. And yes, you can have coconut flour and almond flour on Whole 30 but only to help keep things together, NOT for making pancakes or muffins.
Not too much to this meal. Steak, asparagus and mushrooms. See, eating on Whole 30 can be oh so good.
Tomorrow. It. Is. Done.
You know, this round of Whole 30 was not terrible. I’m really looking forward to finishing this thing, but I am really proud of the progress Preston, myself, and my father in law have made. This isn’t an easy program, but it is seriously rewarding. I’m ready to find that balance, and I am ready to make my new formed habits stick. I very well may enjoy a donut on Thursday (because I have been CRAVING one for weeks) and that is ok. But then it’s back to the grind. I may even pick back up on my 21 Day Fix workouts! Who knows!
I am back with a better attitude and lots to share! Preston and I are on DAY 22 of our Whole 30. It’s crazy to think that next week this thing will be D O N E. I can tell you that my pants fit like a dream, and most of them are actually too big now. I’m feeling lighter, happier, and more comfortable and confident in myself. At this point, I am thinking forward to next week, and what and how I am going to balance my eating and social life after Whole 30. I will touch on more of that later.
Once I changed my attitude after Day 15, things immediately got better. I ran to Costco after work and stocked up on some of my staple items such as eggs, La Croix, Almond Butter, Chicken Breasts and Cashews. Costco is seriously so great when it comes to this diet. Be prepared to drop some $$$, but know it is totally worth it.
That night, I kept it simple and had chicken with some sauteed mushrooms. I LOVE mushrooms. I used a little bit of olive oil, salt & pepper, and some red wine vinegar to give them some flavor.
Saturday morning we had some sweet friends give us some fresh eggs from their chickens. They were SO GOOD. Totally different than your store bought eggs! 🙂
Saturday night, I got a mean craving for some Mexican. I browned some ground turkey and seasoned it with chili powder, onion powder, paprika, salt and pepper to give it that taco-y taste. I put the ground beef over a bed of lettuce, and topped it with some salsa, guac, and jalapenos. It hit the spot for sure.
As usual, my breakfast still consists of 2 eggs and some fruit and turkey bacon.
Last night, we celebrated a birthday over at Preston’s parents house. Half of the guests had Tellini’s Italian, while Preston, Dave (his dad) and myself enjoyed a nice big steak with a side of green beans and squash and zucchini. No birthday cake here! Trust me, it smelled amazing. I could have buried my face in that cake and probably eaten it until it made me sick. Sweets are my downfall. I LOVE everything about them. But, we resisted the urge because we know how good we feel. BUT, doesn’t this look delish?
Tonight we are trying out some Whole 30 approved meatballs with marinara over a bed of spaghetti squash. I’ll be sure to share that recipe on the next blog!
I keep thinking about when this thing is over, what am I going to do? In the past, I have unfortunately fallen back into old habits. I am really, really going to try and not let that happen this go round. I have made SO much progress, why would I want to throw that all away? Because, pizza Whitney! Freaking, delicious, pizza, that’s why!
But in all seriousness, right now my game plan is to eat clean 6 days, and have 1 day where I eat absolutely whatever I want. I also don’t want to exclude going out to eat on those 6 days. My hope is to just make a better decision when I do go out. I hate to miss out on things, especially when Preston and I have a chance to go out and do something fun, or try a new restaurant.
I have never been great at working out, so my other goal is to get in 30 minutes of cardio 3-5 days a week, and start lifting some free weights to tone up!
BIG goals? Probably. I know I’m not going to be perfect, but for me it’s about finding that healthy balance. If I am going to make this a lifestyle change, I have to figure out what works best for me in my day to day. I have some crazy days at work, and sometimes I just want to come home and have a glass of wine, and so that’s what I’m going to do.
I would love your suggestions or recommendations on how you balance your social life/ healthy eating. It’s always been a struggle for me. It’s crazy that I can discipline myself enough for 30 days to eat like this, but can’t seem to keep it up once it’s over. But this time, I am really, really going to try!
